Erasmus KA1 Teachers' Course Title: Gamification and Game-Based Learning: Methodology and AI Tools for the Classroom

Course Conducted by EMBT-Ireland Professional Training Unit, supported by IDESA-Europe

Our comprehensive course covers AI and gamification teacher training to help educators face one of the main modern educational challenges: creating dynamic learning environments that grab student’s attention.

The course is suitable for all educators, and it will be adapted to their needs and school type (primary, secondary, VET etc). Gamification and game-based learning techniques have proven to be effective in increasing student engagement and learning in class. However, student’s constant exposure to technology demands the use of digital tools in class, while the teacher’s workload is increasing. This course is a valuable professional development opportunity, empowering educators to both captivate students and optimise their valuable time in the classroom.

The outline includes a deep dive into gamification in education and game-based learning (GBL), exploring how these methodologies can be seamlessly integrated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and essential ICT tools for educational games.

Participants will gain practical expertise in designing educational games and implementing gamification techniques to the lesson units, leading to student engagement with gamification strategies. By mastering AI-driven approaches, you will learn to reduce your teacher workload with AI tools through intelligent content creation and adaptive learning design, thus fostering a more personalised and effective learning experience for every student.

Course Content:

  • ·       Foundations of gamification and game-based learning: core concepts and motivational theories

  • ·       Exploring and applying game mechanics in educational design

  • ·       ICT tools for educational games and digital learning platforms Hands-on creation of digital games and interactive learning prototypes Generative AI for teaching materials and game ideation

  • ·       Basic AI features for educational games Prompt engineering for game-based lessons to generate comprehensive educational content and lesson plan

  • ·       Application of game mechanics within full lesson plans and unit structures Designing educational games for teachers to facilitate immersive learning experiences

  • ·       Assessment in game-based learning

  • ·       Feedback for improvement in gamified learning environments

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of our AI and gamification teacher training course delegates will be able to:

  • 1.     Apply core theoretical principles in their teaching. Identify and integrate effective game mechanics into educational activities to increase student engagement with gamification techniques.
  • 2.     Use ICT tools for educational games and digital platforms to create interactive learning experiences.
  • 3.     Use AI tools for gamification and game-based learning to develop lesson content. Design comprehensive game-based lesson plans and implement effective classroom gamification systems using AI support.
  • 4.     Apply prompt engineering for game-based lessons to generate detailed content, including rules and assessment rubrics.
  • 5.     Develop appropriate assessment methods for game-based learning activities

Assessment and Certificates:

Assessment of performance will be through delegate-completed portfolio of work. The final course certification for successful completion is a college-issued “Course Certificate of Completion”, for each module studied. In addition, where applicable, delegates will receive relevant EuroPass certificates.
